Rocksound - August 2006

Scotland’s finest celebrate the fact that they have powered through a decade of rock shenanigans with a retrospective look at some of their most celebrated bands. The dubiously-titles CD/DVD combo in fact contains a wealth of fantastically eclectic music from their diverse catalogue, featuring Mogwai, Interpol, Aereogramme and Arab Strap, not to mention the inclusion of forgotten music video gems such as Mogwai’s potato from space and The Delgados’ dancing nuns. The CD carries a more varied consignment of bands than it’s DVD counterpart, although there is something heart warming about watching the transition of early self-directed videos to professional masterpieces. Rock n Roll is all about the passion behind music, and Chemikal Underground has it by the bucket-load. [7/10]

Rather than bothering their arses to think of a proper title for this CD/DVD compilation of the labels output, the idle bastards at Chemikal Underground decided just to name it after it’s catalogue number. How lazy can you get? We should forgive them, however, not only is the Glasgow imprint run by the magnificent and sorely missed Delgados, the music they have released over the last 11 years has consistently been of spanking-bloody-brilliant variety. As well as introducing the world to Interpol, their roster is dominated by Scotland’s finest – Mogwai you know, Arab Strap you probably know and Aereogramme you should know, but all of them are united here in the frontline of CU’s alt. rock attack. Caledonia uber alles! [8/10]
