UNCUT - June 2004 Impressive bass-free post-hardcore debut Bands bereft of bass are nothing new. The John Spencer Blues Explosion, The Immortal Lee County Killers and the White Stripes all knew what to chuck out when they decided to go minimal. Now Glasgow's Sluts of Trust have joined the guitar and drums party. Their debut is raw, often very rude post-hardcore racket, driven by an intelligence that embraces Fugazi, Trail Of The Dead and Queens Of The Stoneage. "Dominoes" recalls Shudder To Think, while "Leave You Wanting More" offsets an indecently sexy, heavy rock riff with wiry energy of PiL. It's brief (barely 40 minutes long), but exhilaratingly brutish. [4/5] SHARON O'CONNELL Rock Sound - May 2004 It's slightly unfortunate that all two-piece bands from now until kingdom come will stand against The White Stripes, but whilst Jack and Meg stick to their reds, whites and blues, the Scottish duo of John McFarlane and Anthony O'Donnell walk down much darker roads. "We Are All Sluts Of Trust" throws together blistering drum fills with rapid-fire guitar riffing to create a raw, ramshackle mess that sounds like the Blues Explosion on a high of Irn-Bru and prophylactics. The untamed rock 'n' roll power of "Greatest Gift" is a sound to behold, and features some brilliantly filthy lyrics to boot - and for similar reasons, the throbbing "Leave You Wanting More" does exactly that. Dirty, smutty, slutty - this is a debut album to wank over and no mistake. [9/10] HARDEEP PHULL |
