Kicking A Dead Pig ~ 2CD Kicking A Dead Pig ~ 2CD  Ref: CHEM057 CD
Select - October 2001

The Scottish arm of the post-rock global conspiracy's remix collection, featuring makeovers by the likes of Kid Loco, Third Eye Foundation and Surgeon.

Kenneth Clarke digging Coltrane or Tricky liking the Spice Girls might seem bemusing, but it's nothing on Mad Mike banks, leader of Detroit techno seditionists Underground Resistance, expressing his strong approval for Mogwai's "emotion, intensity and accumulated energy". Theirs is the sound of Tortoise playing Joy Division tracks with all the jokes taken out, but if the Mog are more likely to use a glockenspiel than a Roland 303, these remixed tracks from the 'Mogwai Young Team' LP stay true to the Kraut/post/noise-rock spirit of the originals. The remixers are mainly from the dance arena - DJ Q's 'R U Still In 2 It?' takes it to the disco and even Arab Strap's 'Gwai On 45' come in with a big beat - but it's still spectral, fragile chords shot through with the blues. Listen carefully and take Mad Mike's advice - staying away from what you don't understand is the action of a mental pygmy. [4/5]
