Melody Maker - 4th June, 1997 Maybe Mogwai should consider changing their name to Skunk, as theyve obviously partaken of a bush or three to create this. An old-style drum machine rolls its unending way through foliage of distorted feedback, frequency snatches and dub dissonance. Strings swell with booming bass before subverted guitar melodies drag the whole thing into copycat echo-chamber overload. A touch of Sonic Youth here, a smattering of Spacemen 3 there. Spooked, spiritualised and more than ever so slightly stoned. N.M.E. - 4th June, 1997 Inappropriate title alert! Wooh! Wooh! For tis everybodys fave Glaswegian flange-ticklers Mogwai and they have written a song called Superheroes Of BMX, except that it doesnt appear to have anything to do with superheroes or bicycles! Fantastic! Instead we have eight minutes of squalling, mildly squealing effects pedal-based activity which is all very louche and rather excellent in that achingly, soul-breakingly experimental manner which makes you think (all too briefly) of skies and dreams and furry animals and the forthcoming Verve single and small Scottish people drinking too much and the overall brilliance of life in general, type stuff. To summarise, then: rocking in a decidedly serene, back-and-forth-in-a-cardigan kind of way. |
