NME - March 1996 As Cinecentre draws its perfectly rounded self to a no less perfectly rounded conclusion, a female delgado is moved to exclaim "I can't believe I was this town". Metaphysical meditations are rarely acknowledged as high on the priorities of our fecund guitar-scraping youth, but Glasgow's Chemikal underground stable is becoming adept at turning convention arsewards up. If bis are the teenage frontline firebrands, then The Delgados stand to one side, slightly but significantly older, absorbed by life's unfathomable current and relaying their slant thereon via ever more substantial spleen-pop such as this. The List - April 1996 Just rejoice in being -bent-tastically silly. Bare facts - March 1996 Every now and again you get a record label that continuously releases fantastic records. A few years ago it was Creation, last year it was Food, this year it could well be Chemikal underground. they have already given us Bis and now they unleash the Delgados on us. In a way it is quite similar to Bis, in the way that the chorus degenerates into a collection of shouts and screams. It starts like Teenage Fanclub during their Bandwagonesque period and ends somewhere in between Huggy Bear and the aforementioned Bis. If that wasn't good enough then third track 'M Emulator' sounds almost exactly the same as Pavement's 'Gold soundz' only with swearing. Bloody ace. [8/10] |
