NotesInterpol - "The Ones That Got Away."
Chemikal Underground played a three band bill at Popkomm in Cologne in 1998 and afterwards Daniel from Interpol ended up on our bus chatting about stuff. He gave us a cassette of demo tracks which would eventually turn into their Fukd ID and first ever UK release. It's a small world right enough, because Daniel used to work at Jetset, the US label that released Mogwai's first album so he new all the guys in Mogwai and that was he got drawn into our inner circle.
We loved the tracks and once we set up the Fukd ID imprint it seemed like the perfect medium to release the band. It's ironic that when it was released, it was the slowest selling Fukd ID to date and with one thing and another and the band being based in NY, they were eventually signed to Matador (on the strength of the Fukd ID release by all accounts). Shortly after signing to Matador and finishing their first album it seemed the world woke up and realised what we had been trying to tell them in the first place - Interpol were fucking brilliant - and they shot off into the stratosphere in a conflagration of silver and gold discs and sell out tours... |
